University of Ibadan Expels 97 Students…

The University of Ibadan has expelled 97 students for extremely poor performance in their academics. PUNCH reports that the students failed to achieve the minimum requirement at the end of the 2015/16 academic session.
In a statement released by the university’s Registrar, Olujimi Olukoya, three of the students dropped out, while others affected were in different levels in seven different faculties. And this includes final year students.
“The Senate, at its meeting of Monday, February 1, 2016, approved that the candidates should withdraw from the university for failure to obtain the minimum academic requirements at the end of the 2014/2015 session,” the statement said.

However, the university has been ranked as the best in the country, with the University of Lagos coming second.

“Being number one in Nigeria and number one in West Africa should not be taken for granted,” the Vice-Chancellor of UI, Prof Abel Olayinka, said. “The real challenge is for us to be ranked among the top five in Africa in the next few years. This is possible given the pedigree of Ibadan over the last 68 years.”
“As we speak, we have perhaps the most highly developed postgraduate school, with easily the largest number of Master’s and Doctoral students in sub-Saharan Africa. The UI School of Business has been approved by the NUC and it is set to take off soon with her flagship MBA programme, which used to be run by our Department of Economics.

“The UI Research Foundation, set up by the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof Isaac Adewole, to reposition research activities in this institution, is perhaps the first of its type in Africa,” he concluded.

Rapper and Dance Cynthia Morgan, who is signed to Psquare brother Jude Okoyes’s record label Northside Music, today, Thursday, February 25, 2016, penned an open letter to Psquare, asking the hip hop signing duo to end their beef and return to the studio.
Recall the rapper was on February 16, 2016 accused of being pregnant for Jude Okoye, which was believed to be the reason behind the issues currently rocking the Psquare brand, an allegation she denied through Social Media network, Twitter.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari has received a powerful message from former President Goodluck Jonathan as he celebrates his 91st birthday today,  February 25.

 Reports say President Muhammadu Buhari shocked the Saudi Arabian government by turning down a
request to join the Coalition of Islamic States to fight against terror.
According to This Day, Buhari, who is on a week-long visit to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, stylishly rejected the
request by his host and ruler of Saudi Arabia, King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz, to join the coalition.

Following the comments made by the chairman of Capital Oil and Gas, Ifeanyi Ubah, on Channels TV, that he can restore the Naira from its N390 exchange against the dollar, to N200 to $1 in one month, Nigerians on Social Media network, Twitter, have aired their opinion on the said issue.
Mr. Ubah, while responding to questions on the Naira on Channels TV’s Politics Today, stressed that the fall of the Naira is not as a result of the activities of the Bureau De Change (BDC) operators.
“Look at the economy, look at the position of the naira today; some of us have ideas on how we can restore this,” he said.

“Do you know how many Burea De Change people who food has been taken out of their families because of this? If you say they are the ones causing it, then where are you today? “It needs strategic management. It won’t take me one month, if you give me part of that consultancy, naira would come back to 200.
“I can bet my life with it, naira would come back to N200. If you call me for that consultancy, I would put naira back to 200.”

When asked how he would achieve the feat, Ubah said: “Don’t worry, that’s my business and business is secret.”
However, some Nigerians on Twitter maintained that the Oil mogul should be focused on the activities of his company, ‘Capital oil’ rather than channeling energy towards what he cannot achieve, while others were of the opinion that President Muhammadu Buhari, should give him the opportunity to bail Nigeria out of the mess.

Soundcity Staff Responds To Shan George’s Scam Allegation

Yesterday, February 22, Nollywood actress Shan George took to Instagram to call out a Soundcity staff named Dro for duping her sometimes last year.
The Soundcity head of New Media, Andrew ‘Dro’ Ameh has responded to the claims by Shan George that she paid him a sum of N100,000 for her son’s video to be played on the music channel.
Dro released a press statement this morning to clear waves on the issue. He wrote:

I had kept mute on this issue when she took to lie in the press in 2015 because the friend/colleague who introduced me to her said he’d handled it and later got to know he served her a legal/court injunction but being learned and a great mother, she has kept at her malicious act.
Hence, I am forced to response to issues I have seen raised in the press and deal with the defamation of character legally and privately – unless she again pulls a ‘nollywood’. Addressing the issues:
1. I run a digital PR and social media marketing company which I had slowed down with since being head of new media for CMA – company behind Soundcity et al.
Clients in the course of over 10 years doing this incl. a long number of A-list and fast rising Nigerian acts. I wouldn’t mar all that work and reputation for NGN100,000.
If I don’t have it, I know a client that would give me to refund but I do have it
2. Never at any point, even months after we had concluded the business did I get a text or call from Shan George complaining of what I did, let alone ask for a refund – which I would have gladly done.
3. Shan George sent me N100,000 (a hundred thousand naira) and never did we – agree – or – imply – or – ask – as payola for airplay but digital PR for the said video – which was uploaded to Youtube myself in the december of 2014. (Digital PR in this case meant speak to blogs to have the video – do a search and see if I delivered)

I need add that at no time did we speak in vernacular, let alone discuss even my job and her claim that i said: “Madam no be me say make u go shoot rubbish video for ur pikin. If u do pem, i go spoil ur pikin music career for this Nigeria o. bring 5oo thousand naira before i play the video or don’t call my fone again, we don’t get paid any salary in Soundcity so we have to do our own hustle to survive here.” I saw this in 2015, and shocked me to the core.
I have been in the industry for 12 years and work at CMA, parent company for Soundcity for 6 out of the 12 years in different capacity and I have never been owed salary, I get bonuses and I have had to account for cash 2/3/4 times that amount to the company.
I spoke to Shan three times, met his son – Jaga once and never at anything did we get so casual to speak in vernacular.

4. As I was shocked to my core when I read what she claimed I said, i did the logical thing. I called her number and sent countless text/SMS for her account details to make a refund even reaching out to a lady who was also introduced to me as her manager only to get a response that said: ‘If she had investment the money, it would have yielded returns (paraphrased),’ re-stating all I had was her 100,000 – we didn’t do ‘investment’ business and as i write this, I never got her bank details.

5. How I met/knew Shan George? As you might have read, A senior colleague – in fact he manages a sister channel and one time supervising producer for the Soundcity channel introduced us.
If it was ever airplay on Soundcity,the question is – why would such a colleague introduce me – head of new media when his position afforded him the authority in the matter.
This is in addition to the fact that the colleague introduced the video director Matt Max to Shan George to shoot the video. Again, never did Shan George pay me 100,000 for airplay on SoundcityTV. I understood they had a falling out

6. The Colleague introduced me for ‘PR,’ I made my pitch but she apparently didn’t know what it was or entitled so I stuck to ‘online’ and doing anything else I could do for her after she pleaded and went into details of things I didn’t need to know – her ill mother and how she was cleaning up after her but ‘really need to do this for her son.’
I fail to understand her plan but if it now, to get a refund from me? It is past that time! She would have to first prove in court that i defrauded her then the guilty party would definitely pay, i am sure now it would be more than NGN100,000.

7. Now, I am hoping this addresses everything for the press and friends who have called while I go about sorting this out the right way, legally. Sadly, would only be replying matters I deem fit of responding to via @dirtyhiphophead only.

AY’s Wife, Mabel Moves Out, As Husband Denies Marriage Crash Story

Reports are rife on the alleged crash of Nigeria’s popular stand-up comedian, Ayo Makun marriage.

AY, married to Mabel Makun in 2008 and the couple who had since lived together as a man and wife, got a bit of media heat late last week when a blogger, Stella Dimokokorkus reported that Ayo and Mabel may have gone their separate ways.

AY, who is currently in London, on the set of a TV series, ‘The Lodgers’ for BBC, has denied knowledge of such stories, threatening to sue for damages.

AY told an online media platform, Naij.com that it is unfortunate that he is not in the country at the moment, he would have gone ahead with the damages suit.

Cowbellpedia Launches Mobile App To Fight Maths Phobia

As part of the build-up to its 2016 Secondary School Mathematics Television Quiz Show, Cowbellpedia has developed a multi-level mobile app that will allow students to practice Mathematics questions everywhere with a lot of fun.
Festus Tettey, Head of Marketing, Promasidor Nigeria Limited explained last week in Lagos, that the move was part of measures to stimulate greater interest by students in Mathematics, which is regarded as the bedrock of science and technology. The Mathematics Association of Nigeria, MAN has identified Mathematics phobia as a major drawback for the interest of students in the subject.

This Cowbellpedia Mobile app, according to Tettey, can be downloaded on Google Play Store and Apple Store. He added that this year’s competition will be in two stages: Qualifying Written Examination and TV Quiz Show. The National Examination Council NECO will conduct the Stage One examination according to him on Saturday, March 19, 2016. NECO is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the General Certificate Examinations in Education in June/July and December/January respectively.

Under this year’s arrangement, NECO will deploy its massive infrastructure to improve the conduct of the examination across the country.  Tettey added that the Stage One of the Mathematics Competition is open to students from 10 – 18 years of age attending full time Secondary Education in both Public and Private Schools in Nigeria. Entry into this competition is FREE.

Each School is required to present their best ten (10) students in Mathematics (five from JSS3 and five from SSS2), irrespective of religion, tribe or state of origin, to enhance their chance of qualifying for the next stage of the competition. According to Tettey, the Stage One registration, which is online, involves visiting www.cowbellpedia.ng

 

Also speaking on the occasion, Managing Director of Promasidor Nigeria Limited, Mr. Olivier Thiry acknowledged, the support of NECO, state Ministries of Education, school principals and teachers, the press and other agency partners for their continued support for the initiative over the years.

He explained from 2016, Promasidor has taken a strategic decision to bring all Mathematics intervention activities by Cowbell under one umbrella, COWBELLPEDIA.

 

Thiry also informed that the company has significantly increased the prize money for the finals for both students and teachers. This year he said, the top prize student winner in each category will go home with One Million Naira in addition to other prizes, while the teacher will be awarded Four Hundred Thousand Naira.

“All these improvements are to underscore Promasidor’s effort to provide a credible platform that discovers, recognizes and rewards excellence in Mathematics, a critical component of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria. This is in addition to the quality nutrition that is provided by the Cowbell brand for the nourishment of the Nigerian populace especially children,” he said.

In order to encourage the Girl Child Education, Thiry appealed that Mixed Secondary Schools must nominate minimum two (2) girls for each category to represent such school. “This is our own little way of encouraging the girl child to take interest in education especially the STEM courses,” he said.

 

The winner in each category this year will go home with a cash of One million naira, a medal, a trophy and an all-expense paid vacation. The first and the second runner-up will take N750,000 and N500,000 respectively. There will also be a plaque, mathematics textbooks, desktop computers and printers for the winning schools.
