Students of Uniosun Reject Renaming Of Institutions

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is calling for the reversal of the recent renaming of all state-owned tertiary institutions in Osun State by the State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola.
Aregbesola had renamed the two colleges of education, two polytechnics and one university belonging to the state after some notable persons in the state.
Addressing newsmen in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the spokesperson for NANS, Awowole Samuel, alleged that although Government has the powers to make such decision, doing so without consultation with relevant stakeholders in the state was undemocratic.
The student body also called on the state legislative arm to rise up in defence of the students, and urge the executive arm to pay more attention to the present challenges of under staffing and lack of basic amenities confronting the tertiary institutions.
However when contacted, the leader of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, affirmed that the House was duly carried along on the issue of renaming the various tertiary institutions.
He said that the renaming of the institutions should not be a problem to the students rather the academic excellence should be top priority for the students.
With the announcement, the Osun State Polytechnic Iree is now to be called Samuel Afolabi Polytechnic, the College of Education in Ila is now Adeyemi Adeduntan College, while the College of Education, Ilesha will now be known as Lanre Omole College.
The Osun State University will now be called Bola Ige University with the colleges at Okuku town named after Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
The Ejigbo campus is named Isiaka Adeleke Campus, the Ikire campus now Eniola Atanda Campus while the Ifetedo and Ipetu campuses of the state university will now be known as Kayode Esho and Hezekiah Oluwasanmi campuses.
